The best route to travel from Chennai to Madurai is via Villupuram–Trichy–Kanyakumari Road and NH38 route. It is the shortest and fastest route for convenient travel. An alternate route to travel from Chennai to Madurai is via Chennai – Chengalpattu – Tindivanam – Salem. It is longer than the previous route and also has occasional traffic. But along the way, you will encounter many scenic views like Kiliur Falls and Yercaud Lake.

You can also take the route via NH 48 and NH 44. It is 597 km and takes around 11 hours to cover. You can take breaks along the journey and enjoy a picnic at Omanthurar Park and Gidangal Lake. Gingee Fort, Sri Valeeswarar Temple, Veedur Dam, and National Fossil Wood Park are interesting stopovers along the route.

Places to visit in Madurai

Meenakshi Amman Temple

Meenakshi Amman temple is one of the oldest and has great historical significance. It is believed that Lord Shiva (Sundareswarar) married Meenakshi (Parvati) at the site where the temple is currently located hence it is also known as Minakshi-Sundareshwara Temple locally. 

The temple celebrates various festivals throughout the year with the most famous being the Thirukalyanam Festival in the month of April-May which takes place over a period of 10 days and the Navarathri festival in the month of Sept-Oct in which the temple displays colorful dolls called Gollu to convey mythical stories. You will be amazed by the spellbinding architecture of the temple.

Thirumalai Nayak Mahal

Thirumalai Nayak Mahal is a 17th-century palace that is a classic fusion of Italian and Rajput styles. It is the palace where King Tirumala Nayaka actually lived. Many films like Bombay, Guru, etc. were shot here due to its beautiful architecture. In the evening, a light and sound show is performed depicting the story of Silappathikaram both in Tamil and English languages.

Alagar Koil

Alagar Koil is a village that is centered around Kallazhagar Temple. The temple is the finest example of the Dravidian style of architecture dedicated to Vishnu. The shrine is famous for the Chithirai festival celebrated for ten days in the month of April – May. A joyful procession is organized from Alagar Kovil to Madurai, which is attended by many people.

Samanar Hills

Samanar Hills is a beautiful rocky stretch of hills that has many Jain and Hindu monuments. It also has caves with carvings and Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions dating back to the 1st century A.D. On the foothill of Samanar Hills, there is a Karuppanasamy temple that has idols made by Jain monks. You can also enjoy the lotus pond at the bottom of the hills.

Gandhi Memorial Museum

Gandhi Memorial Museum has been built as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Established in 1959, it is one of the five Gandhi Sanghralayas in the country. The museum has a collection of original letters written personally by Gandhi to Narayanan Satsangi of Devakottai and a letter to Adolf Hitler addressing him as “Dear Friend”. It also includes a congratulatory message given to Subramania Bharati. It also holds a special exhibition on “India Fights for Freedom ” with 265 illustrations depicting the history of the Freedom Movement. There is a replica of blood-stained cloth used by Gandhi on the day of his assassination.
